Yes, /etc/initab maps the numeric run levels to symbolic names that are
directory names below /etc/runlevels. Like SysV, these are symlinks in
/etc/runlevels/default to /etc/init.d. Unlike SysV, the file naming
convention does not dictate run order. It uses a depend/use
methodology. There is even a concept of virtual runlevels that can be
used to conditionally start services (ie docked/undocked).
Gentoo is about to release 1.4 final. I am running the rc1 on my laptop
with xfree 4.3 beta2 because my graphics is a radeon r250. 2d and 3d
work very nice. When 1.4 and xfree 4.3 final are out and I am updated I
would be willing to give a small presentation.
