RE: Certification

<snip>

Bah, I'm not arrogant. I'm providing the people on this list with another
viewpoint and reaction as to how "The Real World" happens over here. I
agree with you that I am self-confident. I've worked my ass off.

Things are different from big to small companies but to say you can do
more then one thing at a company is a bit unrealistic. If you are hired
to be a Software Engineer you are not expected to be a Network Engineer
and some would argue that yoiu don't even interfere with the I.T.
department. If you are hired to be a network guy - you are the network
guy, if you are hired to be an engineer (software)- you are the
engineering (software) guy and not the IT guy nor the hardware engineer.

Now, before you get your fingers all twisted up let me say that I think I
know what you are saying but maybe you said it in a way that disagrees
with me.

I bring a networking background to my engineering work and I use both.
But to do that I had to work at each one exclusively. I first did the
networking bit and then I did the embedded bit and now I get paid to put
them together (pretty cool stuff). So I understand where you are trying
to go.

I agree you can always change the direction you are going but you have to
be pointed somewhere before you can change. The great thing about Linux
is that you can bite off as much or as little as you can handle at that
moment.

Ok, I've really strayed from the original thread about how certifications
in my opinion don't tend to help out problem solving or engineering
skills. They are great for learning a system but too many people just
stop after they get it. It's actually kinda sad. So, I'm done responding
and if you want, whoever is interested, we can continue this is private
mail.
