As final step, alcohol (especially Everclear 90% ethanol) is best.
Before flushing the surface with alcohol, though, you should use a
water-based solvent like Windex or very dilute ammonia with mild
detergent like shampoo or Dawn. Sugar and other components of soft
drinks have very low solubility in alcohol and are best removed by the
universal solvent: good old oxygen dihydride (H2O) w/surfactants. A
Q-tip makes a good scrubber for smooth surfaces with no protuberances
that can snag its fibers. Canned air will do a fairly good job of
removing excess water. A final alcohol bath will absorb most of the
remaining water from tiny cracks/crevices and speed the drying process.
There may still be hope on the ribbon connector front. I've seen lots of
receptacles for tab-ended ribbon cables that have pull-up locking
mechanisms. Unless those are in the pulled-out-and-ready position,
you'll never get the tab fully inserted and seated. Once the tab is
inserted, the locking collar can be pushed down.
