If you're existing kernel is ix86 (i386, i586, i686, athlon),
then the kernel build configuration program(s) it will _not_
load ./arch/x86_64, but ./arch/i386. You might be able to
optimize for K8, but you're still running it in 32-bit mode.
You can try loading a x86_64 kernel on your existing setup.
But expect to run into support issues when trying to boot it.
