Help with home Ethernet? RH8 on P100, 98 on K62-500

FYI: RH8 runs on a P100 with 128MB, but slowly.

Anyway, both boxes have green lights on my Ethernet hub, and each can
ping the other, but the winblows box launches dial-up when I try to
telnet to the Linux box.

I have:
Edited the hosts file in the /windows directory
Edited hosts.allow, hosts.deny, and hosts on the Linux box
restarted inetd

What step am I missing in getting these boxes to talk?
