SCSI tape backup question

I am working on a Compaq 1600 with a built in SCSI controller and a RAID
controller.  The Red Hat 6.1 works great on it but I can't figure out the
tape drive.  It is on the built in controller [which is used to be
equivalent to an Adaptec 29XX].  I can't get the tape to respond to any
commands.  It is running edge back up which works but we want to se tar
instead [for various reasons].  I've looked all through the edge config
files and I cannot find what device it is using.  I've tried rmt0, nrft0
st0, etc as well rmt[1 thru infinity], nrft[1 thru infinity] etc...

Help!
