General Internet Security

	I am becoming much more concernet with internet security 
issues, and I'm a little confused about: Java; Javascript(?), Active x; 
etc.  My question is; What should web-surfers do to keep our pc's 
and websurfing as private as possible, e.g., which browsers to use, 
which to avoid (IE5.0 :>), dial-up settings, encryption patches, etc.  
This applies to Linux as well as Winblows, I think.  BTW, is it 
possible to actually take a "snapshot" of someones HD?  I've heard 
this one a lot.  TIA.
