Dialup to (gag) SCO machine

Has anyone ever attempted dialing into a SCO box running Morningstar PPP....
It is set to authenticate via PAP, however doesn't send the initial LCP
request... there is a user account set up that has the login shell set to
/usr/lib/ppp/ppp

From minicom, I can dial to the number, get a 'login:' prompt, enter the
username, get a "Password:" prompt enter the password prompt, get the inital
copyright screen thingy, and then ppp starts. (minicom using the defaults)

I used the linuxconf to set up a connection using PAP which didn't work, so
I added lines to the connect script to manually look for the login and
password.... it never would see the login prompt... FINALLY after doing an
at&f&w on the 3Com V.90 modem, and changing the port speed to 38400, it gets
the initial login prompt, but now never sees the password prompt

Any ideas? I've been pulling my hair out for a good 9 hours now... I've
NEVER had this problem before (not the pulling out my hair thing)
