A few more things to try. You should probably try to `startx` after
each step to see if anything changes.

# apt-get install --reinstall xfonts-base

# apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg


You could also try switching to (or maybe it's reinstalling) xfs.

# apt-get install --reinstall xfs

Note: This is in universe, if it doesn't find it you have to turn on universe.
