If I'm reading this right, you still need to set your wlan0 to the proper
ESSID using iwconfig.  Something like:

iwconfig wlan0 essid 'ourwirelessnetwork'

You will also need wpa_supplicant running to deal with the WPA encryption.

If I were you, I would spend my energy trying to figure out why the
network manager isn't picking up your network.  From the output below, it
looks like your card is capable of scanning for networks, so connecting to
one *shouldn't* be a big deal.

Try to run a tail -f /var/log/syslog while you are trying to set things up
with the network manager, or run the network manager application from a
console to see if it outputs anything useful.
