Or multiple single commands:

$ echo -e "open ftp.silug.org\npwd\nls\ncd mirrors\nls\nquit\n" | ncftp

$ cat <<eof | ncftp
open ftp.silug.org
pwd

Agreed.  If you want flow control use expect or perl or python or ruby.
