FW has worked really well for me with the 2.6.x kernel.  As for  
speed, 20 GB should transfer over FW or USB2 in about 30 minutes,  
assuming a transfer rate of 10 MB/s, which COTS IDE drives do quite  
easily.

As for brands, get a cheap IDE drive and a good enclosure.  I've used  
Cobra, but many others out there are good.  Avoid CompUSA's brand of  
enclosures: too small, no air.  You may be able to get an enclosure  
from Steve and Kara.
