NetBEUI is the 'old' transport mechanism from the 80s, that originally ran
LanManager before IBM & Microsoft split over OS/2.

NetBEUI is not a routable protocol, so it can only be used within your
subnet; which means that you are totally secure (unless, as Bryan likes to
point out, you allow someone inside your home/office with a sniffer; since
almost all sniffers are TCP/IP, however, even this risk is pretty
negligable). 'Not Routable' means that since it does not run on TCP/IP, it
cannot be 'transported' across a router - hence, it cannot get 'outside'
your premesis (nor can it run via WiFi, which is TCP/IP).

We always use NetBeui for private networks, .. just be sure to *UNCHECK*
'NetBios over TCP/IP' in all your windoze machines (TCP/IP properties,
Advanced). It also works great to mix protocols - NetBEUI for file sharing,
for example, while running TCP/IP for printer sharing (if needed).

To use NetBEUI on WinXP, however, you need to download the protocol and
install it separately (but it works just fine).
