Actually it wanted the DNS name, not the NetBIOS name.
But it will except an IP address instead.

The UNIX resolver does not support NetBIOS/WINS resolution by default for many reasons.
Although the desktop environment and any end-user programs will listen for NetBIOS broadcasts,
most services (like LPRng, CUPS, etc... ) short of Samba won't.

There are ways to add in NetBIOS/WINS solution via Name Services Switch (nsswitch.conf).
But I don't recommend it.
