Actually, so is parallel ATA in UltraDMA modes.
But most drives support EIDE PIO as well, so UltraATA is commonly (and, 
by specification, wrongly) used in a master/slave setup.

Ziff-Davis ran an article in PCMag/PCWorld in 2003 that said SATA 
supports up to 127 devices.
Most of the other claims in the article were just dead wrong as well.
SATA controllers typically have a high port count because at 7-pins 
(3-ground), serial makes this possible.
