You only need 1 CD, much less even 1 floppy to get started.
If you download all of Fedora Extras and Livna.ORG, in addition to
Fedora Core, it's almost 8 CDs in total.
Debian is designed for Internet installation.
You install a base system and then fetch everything else via "apt-get"
This is typically done via "dselect" (console menu) or "synaptic" (GUI).
Even Fedora is moving this direction.
Fedora already offers a 90MB "minimal" install and you can either "yum"
or "apt-get" (the latter from Fedora Extras) everything else.
There are now several GUIs to YUM, as well as "synaptic" for APT-RPM.
Fedora's Anaconda installer is getting YUM integration shortly to remove
the redunant install options in Fedora (currently 4 other ways than
Anaconda).
