RHCL4.0 (FC2) shipped with Bash 3.0.0 and had various quirks.
RHCL4.1 (FC3) shipped with Bash 3.0.14 which has seemingly addressed
most of them.

Haven't checked what RHCL4.2-Development (FC4-Development) or RHEL4 run,
although I have a RHEL4-Beta system installed I can check when I have
time.
