_Never_ use --force.
_Always_ learn the options and call the explicitly to solve.
In this case --oldpackage does the job.

When I do that, I get...

# rpm -ihv kernel-smp-2.6.9-1.724_FC3.stk16.i686.rpm

        package kernel-smp-2.6.10-1.760_FC3 (which is newer than kernel-
smp-2.6.9-1.724_FC3.stk16) is already installed

Should I really use --force??
