Re: Wal-Mart the worlds biggest linux distributor

Our comapny had bought some Wal-Mart PC's with the Lindows OS
on them hoping to pilot them as small servers. Found the Lindows OS
to be pretty crappy, constant problems with network config and dhcp
not working right, finally scrubbed the Lindows OS and put RedHat
on the PC. Nice hardware, but don't like the Lindows.

Ah yes. It's wonderful when one giant distribution chain (WalMart)goes
after
another distribution chain (Microsoft). The article says that WalMart is
the
clear leader in desktop linux systems. Some interesting facts on how big a
distributor WalMart is:

*Terabytes of data in Wal-Mart's data warehouse in Bentonville: 500
*Terabytes in the data warehouse of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service: 40
*Megawatt-hours of energy consumed last year by Wal-Mart stores: 7.8
million
*Annual megawatt-hours generated by the Hoover Dam: 4 million
*Number of pallets transported by Wal-Mart trucks each week: 50 million
*Annual sales: $220 billion (228 billion in 2003)
*Number of employees worldwide: 1.28 million
*All-time one-day sales record (Nov. 23, 2001): $1.25 billion ($1 billion
in
sales last year, the day after thanksgiving)

From their Website:
Linux distros currently offered: Lycoris, Lindows and now Sun Java desktop.
Just do "electronics" and then sun on the front page search engine.

EXCERPT:

Wal-Mart has added to an already extensive lineup of Linux operating
systems
by signing on to sell Sun Microsystems' Java Desktop System.

At present, the new Sun Java OS gear is a bit hard to find. Wal-Mart has
tucked the kit away on its Microtel PCs page. With SuSE, Lindows, Lycoris
and Sun Java OS computers now all available, Wal-Mart is the clear leader
in
the Linux desktop market.
