Actually, it's just fine for Grandma. Grandma isn't playing with GPG, or
apt. She writes letters, reads email, and looks at pictures of the
grandkids. Linux has worked perfectly for Emma's Maternal Grandparents
since '97 to do that, as well as play with multimedia and silly things
that my Dad likes to do. It also works well for Emma's Paternal
Grandparents for the same thing since '00, plus running their small
business (fork-lifts, trailers, used golfcarts, and a lot more).
Linux is great for people who just want their system to do what they want
it to. Once it's set up, they don't have to worry about updates and other
crap that conflicts and gets so many Windows users into trouble. They can
rely on someone who knows what they're doing to just set it up, and be
done, without having to do anything until the next holiday or two, when
the family tech comes back to town.
I will give you, however, that the desktop is weak for those who want to
play a little more. It's coming along quickly, however, and while the
rule at the top of the industry is to see Linux on the desktop stabilize
within 10 years, within the industry is expecting to see drastic changes
in only a few years.
