SOS: I must be blind, javascript problem, on a deadline

Can anyone tell me why the perl-generated, sql-driven page
http://www.lib.siu.edu/cgi-bin/gore/matrixWITHalert.pl#
keeps the textarea value change after the alert popup in Opera 6.x,
as well as the OTHER browsers, but the VERY similar page
http://www.lib.siu.edu/cgi-bin/gore/matrix.pl#
does NOT keep the new textarea value in Opera 6.x, and yet DOES work in
the OTHER browsers?

Would like to go home sometime tonight,
