LIGHTNING TALKS

SLUUG aka STL!/usr/group aka the St. Louis Unix Users Group (on the 
web at http://www.sluug.org) is holding open submissions for topics 
for LIGHTNING TALKS at the upcoming February 13, 2002 meeting.
(every 2nd Wed. of the month at Sunnen)

Update:
All submissions _must_ be received no later than Midnight of Saturday,
December 29th, 2001.

You do not have to be a SLUUG member to be selected to *give* a 
LIGHTNING TALK (or attend them). But if you attend the two meetings 
(SLUUG and LUG) before the January meeting, you'll be one anyway.
See how easy that was?

So. Now you're saying "OK, I'll bite. It sounds interesting."
Or you're saying "Those Lightning Talks were *awesome* last year!"

What _are_ LIGHTNING TALKS? What _is_ this guy babbling about?

LIGHTNING TALKS are two sessions of five consecutive five-minute talks
separated by a ten-minute recess.

In short, we're providing an audience for anything the speaker feels 
like talking about for five minutes. But, you only get five minutes. 
Not six, not four. Five.

If you send us a short note on your idea, then you've got a shot at 
landing one of the ten LIGHTNING TALKS! (see the email address below, 
and yes, there is a selection process, because there's only ten of
them!)

Topics _might_ include, and are by no means limited to such wondrous
topics as ...

* Have you used an Open Source or Unix/Linux solution you want to tell
  people about?
* Do you have a SLUUG project you want to throw out for discussion?
* Are you looking for people to help you build something?
* Just want to get the word out about something?
* Do you want to proclaim a manifesto?
* Have you used an Open Source or Unix-based technology that you think
  should be better-known?
* Do you want to announce you're looking for a new job or new 
  employees?
* Don't think you have enough material for a tutorial or a main
  presentation?
* You've never given a talk before and you would like to start small?

and of course, the ever-popular Dennis Miller "I Just Wanna Rant"
series:

* You All Suck(tm): Here's what is wrong with SLUUG / Linux / 
  Microsoft / Sun / IBM / Java / Python / Perl / Open Source / 
  Closed Source / White-Hat Hackers / Black-Hat Hackers /
  Jolt / Mountain Dew / Code Red / Crackers / Ritz / HoHos 
  (and/or/versus, any or all cage match).

If any of these apply, and you think SLUUG members _need_ to listen
to you give us the info, the lowdown, the scoop, the 411, ...

Then we want a Lightning Talk from you!

LIGHTNING TALKS are consecutive five-minute talks on a tight schedule.
You should be prepared to take the stage immediately, explain your idea, 
and then leave immediately. If you want to take questions, chat, or trade
business cards, resumes, or URLs, you do it *after* the session. Be prepared 
to provide a URL for your topic, and it helps if it is a relevant one.


If you'd like to give a LIGHTNING TALK, send an abstract of about 50
words about your topic to:

All submissions _must_ be received no later than Midnight of Saturday,
December 29th, 2001.

The SLUUG Steering Committee will be presented with recommendations, and
will make the final selection of talks at the January 9th, 2002 meeting.
Notification will be sent to the selectees, and the schedule announced
at the January Linux SIG meeting on January 17, 2002.

The final schedule of Lightning Talks will also be announced in the
Cronicle prior to the February 13th, 2002 meeting.
