Network help Please.

When I run /sbin/route  the space under Gateway has an *.  Does this
mean that no gateway is set.  If so, what file do I hand edit to
put the proper gateway in.  I'm to the point that I don't trust the
GUE programs in control panel.  Every time I use control panel, I 
have to hand edit /etc/sysconfig/network

Red Hat 7
Two NICS both supported in RH 7
Static IP for internet

I can ping both NIC's but not the gateway to the Internet.  
Any help appreciated.
