I'd suggest just upgrading to a distribution that's glibc-based.  I
did the upgrade by hand, once.  It wasn't impossible, but it certainly
wasn't pleasant.

If you hold off a few weeks you could probably jump straight to a
distribution that's based on a versioned glibc 2.1, which would save
you all kinds of headaches.
