That darn mouse

1) As some of you may recall I had offered to
hire someone for one hour a week as a computer
assistant in exchange for tutoring in math.
The person who took me up on this has decided
to leave college and so I am looking for a
replacement. I would also be willing to pay
cash. Though the amount of money may seem
small you might be able to find other professors
who need computer help. Also, the previous
person did get a letter of recommendation
from me. E-mail me at msulliva@math.siu.edu
if you are interested.

2) Right now I cannot get X windows to run.
I think it is a mouse problem. The previous
person upgraded my Linux system but forgot
to set the 2 button Microsoft mouse to emulate
3 buttons. X windows ran but the mouse "middle"
button did not work. I tired to fix this but now
X windows does not run at all! Currently the
XF86Config is set to "PS/2" and "/dev/mouse".
When I run startx the screen turns blue/green
but then locks up. Using ctrl-atl-backspace
I can see that the error messages are:

error opening security policy file
/usr/X11R6/lib/xserver/SecurityPolicy

Fatal server error:
Cannot open mouse (Device or resource busy)

I'm running Red hat Linux releae 4.2 (Biltmore),
Kernel 1.2.13 on an i686. The machine is a Dell
Deminsion XPS Pro200n.

I have tired using "Microsoft" instead of "PS/2".
When I tired "/dev/ttyS0" the screen would not even
turn blue. Currently in /dev, mouse --> psaux
(a symbolic link I think that is called).

3) Also, when I try to telnet in I get:
telnetd: All network ports in use.
