RedHat Support for 5.0 and...
I thought I might bring you all up to date on the 'official' RedHat5.0 install
on my 486DX33: one ide drive and one scsi drive with the Linux.
I did manage to get it to boot with loadlin (in the dos partition). Copy the
kernel and initrd.img and loadlin to a dos partition and type the line ....
In the mean time, I wrote Red Hat support (as I said, it is the official
version). The responses have been prompt, curtious, and well written.
Usually I get a response back within 24 hours. The $$$ for the Official
version seems to be worth something.
(That was the good news, now ...) Unfortunately, support still hasn't been
able to figure out how to get LILO to install itself on the first partition on
the first scsi hard drive (the second drive in the system). This is a
reasonable thing as I use System Commander to boot the system.
Oddly, although I have seen people post lilo.conf files that have commands
like
map-drive=0x81
to=0x80 (am not sure of the exact syntax -- I am not near the
machine)
The idea of the command makes sense since the scsi installs the drive on
interupt 81h. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work on my machine.
I guess I would give RedHat support an A+ for patience and promptness and a
lessor grade for 'getting it right on the first guess.'
