So I finally figured out what that was all about. Apparently when I
upgraded from grub to grub2, I didn't get some fancy new kernel
command-line arguments added that I needed for fedup to work, the most
important one being rd.luks.uuid=luks-$UUID (as mentioned in
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=980471).
On a related note, the problem I was having with newer Fedora 18 kernels
was a side-effect of the previous attempted upgrade. The newer kernels
were picking up the fedup command line arguments, leading to an
automatic reboot. Oops.
In other words, nothing to see here. :-)
