If you are just "beginning a career" (per your previous post) in this field, and have chosen Linux Systems as your area of expertise, I would NOT even attempt to take the RHCE, until you have about 2-3 years of hardcore experience admin'ing Linux systems, you will be wasting your money (the exam itself costs around $ 800.00) you will NOT pass without hardcore experience . This exam is NOT beginners, not something you can cram for the night before, and not for the faint of heart. It is all 100% hands on, and not a 'download the brain-dump-multiple-choice-cheat-click-and-pass', like 99% of the Microsoft Exams are.
Like the A+ test ;-)
I just got that; I studied for a week but otherwise hadn't done anything since I worked as a tech 5+ years ago. I definitely understand that the RHCE is a real certification.
Instead Nathan, try starting out with something like CompTIA's Linux+ or the LPIC Level 1, and work your way up with experience like that.
So this is definitely more or less where I planned to start out. What I was more referring to with my Red Hat comments was to starting with the RHCT (but I never said that). I suspect that it shares some of the difficulty of it's big brother I figured I'd have to start by using RHEL ;-)
So in that manner do you know how the RHCT compares to Linux+ or LPIC-1?
As far as Windows, etc. I certainly intend to learn as much as possible I'm just trying to decide where to start. For me learning Linux would have a bit more "passion" but Windows would probably be more immediately beneficial. It's kind of a tough choice I guess. Then of course there's the whole philosophy of open source...
Thanks again to all three of you. I very much appreciate the advice/comments/information.
