Re: help... X-Server crashed after update

Well - I finally got back to my odyssey after a couple of days off of
it. Family, life and other stuff intervenes now and then ya know...

Jeff, thanks for the suggestions. First thing I did was run
   $   sudo apt-get install --reinstall xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi
followed by a rebuild of the font cache
   $   sudo fc-cache -f -v
output:

Sure seems to be alot of empty font dirs... and, not only that... all
100dpi and 75dpi font sets are empty AFTER reinstall!???!!!

so, just for grins, I try
   $ startx
and crash with the same errors - same missing "fixed" font

Then, I looked up the 'xorg ati' driver Jeff suggested I try... and found
it's embedded within the xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-driver-ati
packages.  So...

what next should I do? It seems doing a reinstall is not getting the job
done. If I try 'sudo aptitude install --reinstall' I get a message saying
it's not super cow - whatever that means... (ok - I get it - "aptitude -v
moo" then aptitude -vv moo then aptitude -vvv moo, etc for the amusement
of those with too much time on their hands [easter eggs] and even more fun
with "cowsay"  tisk-tisk)

So, I try
   $ sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-driver-ati
xserver-xorg-video-ati

well - I suppose I should've checked to see what drivers I've got
installed...  no joy...

The thing is - ya know, everything was working fine for a couple of
years. Why did this get so conflicted with the last update? Geez... I am
getting quite frustrated. I want my machine back... This is the most
challenging issue I've had to face this year so far - I don't want to trash
the machine and I really don't want to do a complete re-install. Heck, it
shouldn't be so hard...

ok - enuf whining - should I do as suggested by Jason and remove X and try
reinstalling X from ground up? It sure seems most of the fonts and now the
X server is completely crapped out - and the normal reconfig stuff isn't
helping and the standard reinstalls aren't doing what they should be
doing. All I know is I've gone from what I thought was a simple font issue
to loss of xserver - and nothing so far is working.
