Actually VMware Server may not be a very good solution if Wolfgang wants
to run applications that need to interact with local hardware like
CD/DVD drives, USB devices, floppy disks, and so on. Only one guest can
use such a peripheral at any time.

VMware Server is optimized to host virtual servers. It can be a
disappointment if you want to run guest OSs as though they were a
collection of PCs equipped with typical peripherals. If the tasks the
guest OSs do are strictly limited to service responses and protocol
dialogs, VMware server could be a good choice. Just be aware of its
limitations.

On the other hand, VMware Workstation (not free) might do a better job.
