Try disabling the 3D output of your sound card (typically
done at module-load time, hence /etc/modules.conf or
modprobe.conf).
Or try throwing in a quality sound card that doesn't taxi the
PCI bus like a Creative Audigy series or newer. I finally
just went back to an Audigy2 ZX on my Athlon64 recently and
I'm very glad I did versus the on-board ALC850 when it came
to CPU (and, therefore, constrained PCI) load.
Only a few vendors out there add logic to the Realtek ALC
codecs to cut the load 1/4th.
