Migrating to Thunderbird

Rebuilding a machine for a friend, .. previously he was using Mozilla Mail.

After moving the profile to the new machine, it displayed properly the 
FIRST time opening Mozilla, but subsequently none of the sub folders will 
appear! Neither Mozillla nor Thunderbird will display the previous 
subfolders, ... yet creating a new folder *under* that account shows the 
folder as already existing. Moving the Mail folder to the profile directory 
produces the proper email account names, but no subfolders.

Has anyone ever seen this? I can't find any display setting to affect 
subfolder view, is there one I might have missed?
