Wait until your distribution provides official packages for it.  'Nuff
said.  The rest of what's said here is pretty much pertenent to others
too.

    Ubuntu and Fedora tend to keep on top of things in that regard.
    They're generally running pretty well-tuned bleeding-edge
    configurations (well, not CVS HEAD bleeding-edge) and will offer the
    newer releases of things sooner.

    Debian and RHEL, on the other hand, tend to try to stabilize on one
    release for a while before jumping right to another one.  This means
    that, short of moving to the unstable branch (in the case of
    Debian), you'll have to install from source.  See comment below.

Compiling Gnome from source is a royal pain in the ass.  If you've never
dealt a lot with Windows DLL hell, you'll be in for a real exercise in
pain.  Not to mention a test of your patience.
