usb desktop icon

is there a way to rid my self of that pesky desktop icon representing a 
usb drive?  i've searched a little and i haven't seen anything, except 
for articles telling me that i should see the icon when i insert the drive.

i've formatted it ext2, and i have it permantly mounted in fstab.  so i 
do not really want to see it on my desktop.
