/etc/hosts not consulted

After upgrading from FC3->FC4, none of the entries in my /etc/hosts file
work. These are not DNS-listed items -- just local stuff here in The
Back Room(tm). They worked fine in FC3. (I've checked the content,
ownership and permissions for both 'hosts' and 'nsswitch.conf'.)

Does anyone have any ideas what changed in the background in FC4 to
cause this?
