If yum is causing you issues there's always APT. :)
YUM works fine for me but I know from experience apt works fine. 
( and is faster )
You can get apt at, http://freshrpms.net ( something like that )
I don't know how apt handles x86 and x86_64 but I never had trouble with
it.
