Radeon 9000 3D linux support? DRI experiences?

Hello,
Finally got my tax return, and I'm looking at picking up one of the Acer 
laptops that are popping up on tigerdirect, newegg, and such.

Their GPU's are integrated Radeon 9000's.
I went to ATI's website, but they don't seem to offer a Linux driver for them.

The DRI project claims to offer 3D acceleration for ATI chips up to the 9250, 
integrating with Mesa.

In the past, I have not had much luck with Mesa, but I haven't really messed 
with it all that much.

Has anyone else been down this road that might have any advice?
