Kernel and yum troubles...

I frequently run:

yum update

To keep my FC3 installation up to date. However, I don't want to move
beyond the 2.6.9 kernel. yum automatically installed 2.6.10 a while ago,
and that is fine, I simply don't boot into that kernel. However, now I
have a different problem. I found a 2.6.9 kernel that has the stack
configuration I need to use my wireless card without locking up. The
only problem is that when I try to update the kernel like the
instructions say to do:

rpm -Uvh kernel-smp-2.6.9-1.724_FC3.stk16.i686.rpm

I get the following error:

error: Failed dependencies:
        kernel >= 2.6.10 is needed by (installed) hal-0.4.7-1.FC3.i386

Now, I understand this error and why it is happening. However, I don't
know how to get around it. I tried to do a yum remove kernel-2.6.10 and
it complained about hal. I tried to remove hal and it complained about a
lot of stuff.

Any suggestions on how to get that rpm installed?

Also, is there a way to specify in the yum.conf file to not update the
kernel? I know you can do it using FC's graphical tool, but I'd rather
use yum.
