been doing some playing with linux loopback devices and encrypted
loopback devices
the loopback device is REALLY slow
3ware raid card, 9 drives, all as single raid 5
athlon mp 1.7 dual
512 MB ram
without loopback i can stream about 45-47MB/s to the mounted volume
with loopback but no encryption that drops to 14MB/s
with loopback and with encryption (aes128, aes256, and serpent) that
drops to 12MB/s
at first i just thought that a 9 drive raid5 was the bottleneck and
was going to try a 10 drive raid 50, but if i can hit 45MB/s without
loopback i dont think that is the problem
has anyone done any testing on this?
customer wants his data encrypted, but the performance of the loopback
is utterly horrible
any ideas?
Casey
