Could be ATA arbitrator (peripheral logic) and ATA intelligence (drive
logic) conflicting.

What drive on what chipset?  If you don't know, give me a dump of:  

  # lspci -v
  # cat /proc/ide/hdc/*

I've had some flakiness with a few ATAPI devices on kernel 2.6.
