sorry for asking earliar question ... i found (after much looking about)
a web page showing that:
tar --exlude=/home/ cvpjf /Portney/Phoenix/bakup-filesystem.tar.bz /
would work nicely (i hope) for backups and:
tar cvpjf /Portney/Phoenix/bakup-bntly_rhds.tar.bz /home/bntly_rhds/
would work for backing up my directory. i'm thinking about using each
mountpoint though, as it's own filesystem, and putting it in a folder by
itself named backup-filesystem.
