That's because the pre-empt patch is now standard in kernel 2.6.  You're
now introducing additional overhead, and reduced throughput, in context
switching to get increased response time.  On a desktop, the reduced
throughput is not noticeable.

[ AFAIK, Linus was a genius with his previous approach of 1 kernel entry
per CPU.  This is the most ideal approach on 2-4 way systems IMHO. ]

You could always fix the issue with the pre-1.0-6xxx series drivers by
rebuilding the kernel with a different stack size.

This is the main reason I recommend Xandros Deluxe Edition to people
coming from Windows and feel they A) must use Linux and B) must pay for
it.

compatible desktop OS/apps for the former, no free/legacy reuse for
