Fedora Core 2 64bit Touchpad issues

I am one of the lucky people that has an r3000 series compaq laptop with 
the alps touchpad that does not work in Core 2.  Just curious if any of 
you have heard or seen a fix that does not require recompiling the 
kernal?  I think I will have to but if there is an easier way I'm all 
for it.
