Actually, squirrelmail works *fine* with large Maildir-format
mailboxes.
With large flat-file mailboxes, it takes the IMAP server (assuming
we're talking about uw-imapd, which is the *worst* IMAP server ever)
so long just to scan for headers that squirrelmail gets killed by
PHP's built-in script timeout.
I have a client who occasionally reads her mail with squirrelmail, and
she tends to have 3-6k messages at any given time. It never worked
with uw-imapd, but after I switched the office over to courier-imap,
it started working just fine. (And this is on an old PIII/500.)
