I found my problem. /dev/cdrom was still symlinked to /dev/scd0.  
I broke that link, then symlinked /dev/cdrom to /dev/hdc. 
GRIP works! No "hdc=" required!
Now to see if I can make cdrecord work...   

For those of you who have not tried kernel 2.6, it is noticeably
faster than 2.4.  There is no going back...
