Configuration Question: Kernel 2.6 and CD-R/RW

Under kernel 2.4, my CD-R/RW was using scsi emulation.  I had the
following entry in /etc/fstab for /dev/cdrom 

  /dev/cdrom  /cdrom  iso9660  defaults,user,noauto,ro  0  0

and the /boot/grub/menu.lst start-up line included "hdc=scsi." 
That same arrangement works in kernel 2.6.  But I understand that SCSI
emulation is no longer required.  At least that's what the little note
tells me every time I boot my system.

  ide-cd: passing drive hdc to ide-scsi emulation.
  ide-scsi is deprecated for cd burning!
  use ide-cd and give dev=/dev/hdX as device.

So, I tried simply deleting "hdc=scsi from grub's start-up line. 
Boot-up then *looks* normal:

  hdc: ATAPI 40X CD-ROM CD-R/RW...
  uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.2

However, when I launch GRIP, I get an error message:

  unable to initialize /dev/cdrom.

Apparently I need to do something with dev=/dev/hdX. But I don't know
exactly what that something is.  Suggestions, please!
