This is just a stab in the dark, but do GNOME2 programs still behave like
good X programs? If so, couldn't you just modify .xinitrc to start up your
gnome-terminal at a specific height once, or just modify ~/.Xresources to
something like

gnome-terminal*Geometry:  80x65-0-0

? If this works, you'll have to read X for more information. Anyway, this
is just a stab in the dark  as I don't know if GTK2/GNOME2 programs accept
all of the standard options.
