Printing Labels
Hello, how about a little introduction (my label printing question, 'what
should I use to print address labels 'Avery 5160 1" x 2 5/8" 'is at the end
of message).
My name is Matt Wehland, I've been on this list for 4-5 years now (with some
time off when I moved back north to Chicago land)
I'm back in Carbondale again (off of 127 4 miles south of old 13, for those
who care).
While I've been in the Tech industry since before I could drive (computers and
video editing/installation), I've started a new company (Non-Technical:
'Little Grassy Gifts and Gardens' selling homemade arts and crafts with soy
wax candles being are main product right now)
I am also in the process of finally getting off of the MS bandwagon for my
workstation (been using/playing worth linux for servers for a couple of years
now).
My primary WS is running debian woody with the latest stable KDE (3.1.4 )and
Koffice (1.2.1), my partners WS is running Knoppix 3.2 with whatever comes
with that release, no updates.
/* Label printing question */
I need to print some labels for my candles, among other things. Right now I
am using Avery 5160 2 5/8" x 1" (30 labels per page, 3 across 10 down)
labels for the candles, but I will be changing soon. I also need to set up
for some business cards and some smaller labels when I get a chance.
WHAT WOULD YOU USE to print these labels?
Here's what I hae done so far-
searched for label printing software- came up with a linux module to print
labels that were started on a Win32 machine, a request on LINFUND.org to fund
a label printing project, and other cruft.
What have I missed?
I haven't gotten openoffice to print yet (uses LPR which I haven't set up I
think), but I remember trying to set up labels anyway and had problems (don't
remember what they were, maybe I should try again, oh yeah I have to get OO
installed on my debian machine now)
I've tried using KWord for the labels, but have had some problems, both user
and software. First I was using the Knoppix 3.2 machine and tried to cheat
(since I haven't use Kword before and haven't used frames) and use tables to
set up the page, but tables in that version of Kword didn't work right
(insert a table 10x3 and all you get is 2xsomething and can't adjust the
table for the correct number of cellsXrows). So I moved to my debian machine
(KDE 3.1.4, KWord 1.2.1, the latest stable debs from kde.org) and tried
again. Still problems with tables (they worked better, but I couldn't figure
out how to size them correctly). So after wracking my brain and burning out
google, I join the Koffice mailing list (koffice.mail.kde.org) and ask about
doing labels.
There I get info on how to use frames to do what I want. Cool, still clunky
(why aren't there templates for these things, everybody uses them and I found
messages 2 years old about starting a repository for Avery templates and a
program to make setting up for labels easier, but can't find anything now).
So I am in the process of trying to get the frames set up (there must be
something I'm missing about how to join frames that would make resizing and
copying much easier, but I'm just learning), and I'm getting close to having
a useable template when KWord crashes.
After that any time I try to use frames, whether in my template_in_progress or
even in a brand new page, after inserting a few frames if I try to move a
frame with the mouse, it relocates to the upper left corner and doesn't want
to leave. I can reset the geometry and type in new coordinates, but that
will be pain, and how much work do I want to risk in a program that will blow
up on me.
I plan on trying the latest Koffice 1.3beta4, I believe, but I need to get
these labels done (I printed the last batch in windows after the KWord
crash), and don't want to have to boot back into windows. I didn't even set
up dual booting (more incentive to finish my transition and them wipe that MS
drive), I have to move cables to boot into windows.
I can't afford the time to play with Kword if it won't work.
I need to print these labels tomorrow.
I refuse to boot back into windows (but will if I really have to, I wasted too
much time last Friday trying to get labels printed on Linux and went to
Makanda Vulture fest on Saturday with no sleep from Friday).
Please help me get these things printed on Linux so I have one less reason to
ever boot back into windows (besides getting the last of my multimedia data
off of that drive).
/* End_Label_Question */
Sorry for the long question, introduction, explanation.
Thanks for the help,
Matt Wehland
