new Red Hat beta
In case anyone is interested, Red Hat updated the "phoebe" (8.1) beta
the other day. If anyone is running the last phoebe (the second one,
8.0.93), you might be able to update your system using apt.
Start by getting apt here:
http://ftp.silug.org/pub/freshrpms/testing/phoebe/
If the rpms there won't install on phoebe2 for some reason, I think I
still have the phoebe2 versions around here somewhere. Or you can
probably just rpm --rebuild the .src.rpm.
After setting /etc/apt/sources.list appropriately, try installing the
new kernel:
apt-get update && apt-get install kernel\#2.4.20-2.48@i686
It probably will come back with various things being upgraded and
other things being removed:
The following packages will be REMOVED:
cups-drivers spamassassin vixie-cron
Say "n" and try again to install the kernel plus those packages:
apt-get install kernel\#2.4.20-2.48@i686 cups-drivers spamassassin vixie-cron
Because apt still doesn't get the rpm command-line right, the kernel
install will fail, but the other packages will be upgraded. Just
repeat the command to get the kernel package installed.
At this point try apt-get dist-upgrade. It worked on one of the two
systems I tried it on. :-)
