make rpm

Plain brown wrapper time here. Whenever I try to 'make rpm' on the
2.5.59 kernel, it fails with:

...
+ cd kernel-2.5.59generic
+ LANG=C
+ export LANG
+ make oldconfig dep clean bzImage modules
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `oldconfig'.  Stop.
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.7928 (%build)


RPM build errors:
    Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.7928 (%build)
make: *** [rpm] Error 1

Has anyone been able to 'make rpm' successfully?
